Mayor Jim Watson met with Carleton University Student Association (CUSA) president Obed Okyere July 8 to discuss student issues, specifically plans to make public transit more accessible to students, according to the mayor’s press secretary.

Okyere said he wanted to talk to the mayor so they could discuss Carleton students’ access to public transit.

Carleton students don’t have the same access to buses as University of  Ottawa students, he said.

Okyere said he hoped to talk to the mayor about extending bus hours.

But he said he was disappointed to hear that city council has already approved OC Transpo’s budget for the year. This means that no changes can be made to bus service hours.

“This is going to be an ongoing discussion,” Okyere said.

“The mayor is happy to listen to Carleton students.”

The meeting lasted just over 20 minutes, he said.

Watson graduated from Carleton with a bachelor of arts degree in 1983.

“We have awesome alumni and we are very proud to see one of our own as mayor,” Okyere said.
