Obed Okyere has already won the United Way Award for Community Leadership — now he wants to win your vote.
Third-year political science student Okyere is running for the position of vice-president (student issues), a job he said he is ready for given his past leadership experience.
Among his plans, Okyere hopes to establish a campus “Interfaith Centre,” which he said would be beneficial to people from all religions, and will give everyone the chance to worship together, something he hopes will ease tensions on campus.
“We want students to focus on issues that are affecting them directly, not feel like they will be attacked because of their faith,” Okyere said. “Our campus needs to be united, not divided.”
Okyere is running as part of the “A Better Deal” slate, and part of that better deal, he said, is that he will be devoted to lobbying for students, whether it be for lowering fees or the U-Pass.
“I am very passionate about getting fees lowered. I want to be able to get a good education and know that I won’t be thousands of dollars in debt,” Okyere said.
Okyere said he feels it is important for students to get better transportation, which the U-Pass would address.
“We deserve better services,” he said. “I will go talk to OC Transpo on behalf of students.”
Okyere said he feels his experience working with youth, which is what he won his award for, proves that he knows how to get things done.
“I want to work and lobby on behalf of students.”
