The department of university safety is undergoing an equipment and technology upgrade in its communications centre, safety director Allan Burns said Sept. 14.

“The planning for the communications centre has been [underway] for a year and a half now, maybe almost two years,” he said.

The upgrades will make it easier for dispatchers to deal with increased responsibility, he said.

The improved communications centre will be comprised of two regular dispatch consoles with four monitors each, and four large-screen monitors on the wall.

“There’s a lot more involvement, a lot more cameras, more alarms [and] more emergency responsibilities,” Burns said.

The new technology will also help officers respond to calls, he said.
