As ridership increases, future wait times for the O-Train could be reduced.

Since the introduction of the U-Pass for Carleton and University of Ottawa students this fall, ridership on the O-Train has taken a noticeable leap, according to the 2011 OC Transpo business plan.

During the busiest commute times both Greenboro- and Bayview-bound trains are filled to capacity, which stands at 285 people, the plan said.

It proposed two more trains be added to the eight kilometre stretch of tracks, which would increase capacity by 50 per cent.

However, the budget has currently only approved the purchase of one new train.

According to the business plan, adding more trains to the O-Train route would reduce wait times during light rail construction in upcoming years.

The case for adding more trains will be presented to the transit committee before May 2011.

The final goal, according to the plan, would be to cut down the O-Train wait time from 15 minutes to an ideal 10 in order to accommodate the influx of students.
