The University of Calgary is proposing to amend and increase residence fees.
“Residence Services aims to break-even each fiscal year. Residence Services is not eligible for government or institutional funding, and therefore must be self-funded,” states the university website.
While some residences would only incur a slight increase of around 2.5 per cent, others, called “Traditional Style Residences,” could see an increase of up to 8.5 per cent for the 2015-16 school year, according to the proposal.
Incoming students could be facing a fee increase of almost $500 for a single room in either of the traditional residences. Family housing locations on campus could be subject to a five per cent increase.
However, fees would not change for more luxurious residences such as Crowsnest building, which has apartments, or Aurora building, which has suites.
The university website said, “Each year, operational costs go up. This is not unique to the Calgary market . . . Utilities, services and wages are a few of the reasons for the proposed increased rates.”
The Board of Governors must still pass the proposals before any changes are implemented.
