Andrew Latty, striker, soccer:

According to former midfielder Joey Kewin, third-year striker Andrew Latty is not only a top player, but a great leader on the men’s soccer team.

“A player like Latty leads both off and on the field,” Kewin said. “I know for a fact the younger guys look to him for leadership and guidance, and it’ll be essential for him to fill that role.”

After being named Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East player of the year in 2012, Latty continued in the 2013 season with eight goals in 14 games.

For Kewin, Latty is a huge leader outside of soccer with the charity work he has done.

“One thing about Latty is he’s very selfless,” he said. “If he thinks something isn’t right, he’s going to do his best to fix it.”

Latty won the 2013 Community Service Award for his work in the community, such as teaching children to play soccer.

Kewin said Latty also made sure the graduating players on the men’s soccer team were honoured at the Ravens varsity banquet, giving them a Carleton cardigan, among other gifts, to commemorate their contributions.

Now that Kewin has graduated following a season in which he was named OUA East player of the year, he said next year’s team will be very youthful but are still in good shape with Latty as an emerging leader.

“It’s tough to say, they haven’t had too much competition yet . . . but Andrew Latty is going to be a great leader as well as some of the upcoming leaders,” Kewin said.

He said the team has the potential to return to the OUA Final Four with Latty as a leader, as well as third-year defencemen Michael Calof and Michael Reynolds.

He said it all boils down to experience, but with leaders like that on the team they can return to their winning ways.
