Home Photos Through the lens, the best photos of the winter semester Through the lens, the best photos of the winter semester By Spencer Colby - April 12, 2020 218 Over the course of the winter term, people from across Ottawa and other parts of the country gathered at various times, in protest against the Canadian Government actions towards Wet’suwet’en peoples and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s (RCMP) occupation of Wet’suwet’en land. Taking these types of photos require a lot of attention, you have to make sure you capture the moment and ensure you are not too over or under-exposed. [Photo by Spencer Colby] Protestors stand in solidarity with Wet’suwet’en peoples and in protest against the Royal Canadian Mounted Police’s (RCMP) occupation of Wet’suwet’en land. The original photo that came out of the camera was extremely over-exposed however, turning the photo into a black and white image helps save it and gives the photo a new look. [Photo by Spencer Colby] These types of photos are completely unexpected and require the art of patience and positioning yourself in the right place. For this photo, positing my self in the tunnel that leads from the locker rooms to the ice and waiting for the players to come out. [Photo by Spencer Colby/The Charlatan]After being ejected from the game, Carleton Raven’s forward Cody Caron was approached by 3 kids who asked for his game stick. This photo to me is a lucky shot since I was right around the corner from the men’s bench and door which allowed me to quickly adjust my exposure, focus and grab the shot. [Photo by Spencer Colby] This photo was taken during the Canadian U Sport National Basketball Championships hosted at Lansdown Park and the Raven’s nest at Carleton University. When shooting sports, I strive to always have two cameras, one equipped with a wide-angle lens and the other with a telephoto lens. The telephoto (zoom) lens allows me to get shots from the opposite side of the court and shots on my side of the court with the wide angle. With the nonstop actions that basketball is, switching between the two cameras and sometimes you are left with super tight shots of basketball players on your side of the court.
