The Ontario Ministry of Finance released what they call the “sunshine list” of public employees earning over $100,000 per calendar year, a list that includes six Carleton employees.
At the top of the list for Carleton is former president Samy Mahmoud who made $341,435.72 for th year of 2008, followed by vice-president finance and administration Duncan Watt, faculty members Uma and Vinod Kumar, provost and vice-president academic Feridun Hamdullahpur, and Carleton Dean John Osborne.
The first “sunshine list” was first published in 1997 as a result of the Public Sector Salary Disclosure Act, requiring organizations that obtain funding from the Ontario government to release the names, occupations, salaries, and full taxable benefits of employees in order to increase accountability for taxpayers.
Among university staff members are elected officials, doctors, dentists, physicians, police officers, principals, teachers, and youth workers.
Ironically, the list was released the same day minimum wage was increased to $9.50 per hour.
The so-called “sunshine list” – the annual report released by the Ontario government of public sector workers who rake in a salary of $100,000 or more – was released March 31. Out of 465 employees at Carleton University who qualified for the list, here are some financial facts to ponder:
– Roseann Runte, Carleton’s current president made $181,781.85 last year, compared with Samy Mahmoud, Carleton’s interim president from 2007-2008 who made $341,435.72.
– Six championships in seven years for the men’s Ravens basketball team could be the reason Dave Smart, Carleton’s coach of men’s basketball made $109,598.32 last year. He is the only coach at Carleton who qualifies for the Sunshine List.
– 12 Librarians at Carleton made over $100,000 last year. Margaret Haines, Carleton’s head librarian, makes $155,223.10.
