Carleton student Will Chabot MacLean, 27, died peacefully Oct. 28, according to an obituary published in the Louisville, Ky. newspaper the Courier-Journal.

MacLean was born in Louisville, but resided in Maniwaki, Que., the obituary said.

“You were always hilarious and never in a bad mood. We could all learn from that. We miss you dearly here in Louisvile [sic],” commented Todd Burks from Louisville, Ky., on the online version of the obituary.

University officials say MacLean died off-campus in his apartment, and the cause of death is unknown, according to the Ottawa Citizen.

Ottawa police could not provide any further details.

MacLean’s half-brother, Mark Chabot, told the Citizen he had spoken to MacLean’s mother Elizabeth, who said MacLean had been found on the couch in his apartment. Chabot described MacLean as “a nice guy,” and was not aware that Will had any kind of medical condition, according to the Citizen.

Neither Chabot nor Elizabeth could be reached for comment.

Carleton president Roseann Runte expressed her condolences to MacLean’s family and friends in an e-mail to the Carleton community Nov. 2.

“This incident reminds us all of the fragility of life and the need we have to care for each other,” Runte said. “If you are living on your own, please be sure to have a friend who will look in on you and on whom you will check.”

“Let us celebrate Will’s life and the fact that he chose to study and give himself the tools to make his own life and that of his community better,” Runte said. “Let us remember him and let us remind ourselves of our commitment to community and to looking after each other.”
