Carleton’s varsity rowing team put on a solid performance at the Ontario University Athletics rowing championships Oct. 24, hosted by Brock University.
Despite cold, windy weather and some sick players, the Ravens had some strong races.
Outstanding players included Kent Mamen, who claimed fourth place in the men’s singles, and Elise Damoiseaux, who placed sixth in the women’s singles.
“We need to keep the focus. It’s late in the season, it’s cold and everyone is tired. As long as we have some good, solid practices this week, we should be ready,” said Damoiseaux, of the upcoming Canadian championships.
“Many of the teams we will face next weekend we have competed against all season, so you learn what to expect and who you need to beat. A big part of rowing is mental, and keeping calm and focused is key.”
Only the athletes who made it into the top three qualified to move on to the finals.
“The positive thing is that the team is growing,” said head coach Siobhan McLaughlin.
“Of course, it would be good to start getting some medals.”
The Canadian University Rowing Championships take place Oct. 31 in Montreal.
