Carleton’s Sprott Business Student’s Society (SBSS) came second at the Jeux de Commerce (JDC) Central at Wilfrid Laurier University on Jan. 24, confirmed co-captain Mark Featherstonhaugh.

The competition began in Quebec in 1989 but has expanded to include Western and Central Canada, according to the SBSS website.

The team took home a total of eight awards, an increase from last year’s take home of seven, said Featherstonhaugh, a fourth-year business student.

The team’s energy and spirit was a highlight of the weekend, he said.

Carleton placed second overall in the competition, with individual wins in market management and overall sports and a second place finish for school of the year and social, Featherstonhaugh said.

Both Featherstonhaugh and co-captain Lauren Potts received an additional award for organizing committee of the year, he said.

“I think we’re all really proud of our results this year, especially because it was something we truly did as a team,” said member and third-year business student Desirae Odjick.

“Every team member was out supporting the sports team, watching debate presentations or case presentations when they weren’t competing themselves, and we stayed energetic and positive on about four hours of sleep both nights,” Odjick said.

Still, Featherstonhaugh said there is room for improvement.

“Last year we were very strong academically, this year we had a lot more spirit and won some team awards we didn’t win last year,” he said. “Next year I think the key is to get the academics back up to the level they were last year and keep the spirit and team dynamics.”
