A shooting at York University left two women injured the night of March 6, according to Toronto Police.

Police said the shooting occurred in the food court of York’s Student Centre when a man passed through and discharged a firearm. One woman was shot in the leg and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The second was wounded by shrapnel and also taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and released shortly thereafter. The suspect fled the scene on foot.

Police stated they do not believe the women were specifically targeted. York released a statement March 7 in response to the incident.

“I would like to express my thoughts and concerns for our two students who were injured when a firearm was discharged on the evening of March 6th on our Keele campus,” York president and vice-chancellor Mamdouh Shoukri stated. “Toronto Police Service was called immediately and York University is co-operating with Toronto Police Service in their investigation.”

While normal university activities have resumed, Shoukri said York has amplified its safety measures. This includes an increased presence of university security patrols and greater use of Toronto Police services on campus.

“Our immediate focus is on supporting the two students and their families, and in providing counseling support for York Community members,” Shoukri stated. “Senior University representatives have been with the victims at the hospital, and I am appreciative to hear that both are receiving the treatment they need. I am thankful to understand their injuries are non-life-threatening.”

Police have asked for any information regarding this incident to be brought forward.  They described the suspect as “black, mid-20s, 5’8”-6’, with a black hooded sweatshirt and black coat.”
