So you bring someone home. Whether it’s a one-night stand or your long-term partner, great things are about to happen and you’re feeling good about it.
But wait. Your roommate is in the next room, and you can hear them talking to their parent/best friend/significant other on the phone. Maybe the dishwasher is on. Maybe your basement neighbour is singing again. In that moment, nothing feels less sexy.
It’s a reality of student living that we share houses and have roommates. Once the door closes, you don’t want to hear them, and they really don’t want to hear you.
So dim the lights, light some candles, and put on some music. These are my best picks for music to get down and dirty to.
- “Sexual Healing” Marvin Gaye
Start off with this Marvin Gaye classic. Its iconic bass line and Motown guitar rhythms set the tone without being cheesy. Just ignore the fact that your parents probably had sex to this song too.
“Baby I can’t hold it much longer / And it’s getting stronger / And when I get that feeling / I want sexual healing.”
- “Anything Can Happen” Ellie Goulding
This one is meant to inspire a live-while-you-can feeling. Hopeful, with a solid beat drop and a good bass track, this song makes you feel like anything really could happen. Like, maybe he’ll find your clitoris. Just saying.
“Baby I’ll give you everything you need / everything you need, oh.”
- “Closer” Tegan and Sara
This catchy pop song will have you feeling good—even before things get going. Also acceptable as pre-date music, it’s bound to put a spring in your step. It’s time to get a little closer.
“Here comes the heat, before we meet a little bit closer / Here comes the spark before the dark, come a little closer.”
- “No Interruption” Hoodie Allen
Not (too) ashamed to admit it, this is basically one of my all-time favourite songs for anything. But since it’s about sex, I figured it should probably be on the playlist. There’s just something so coy about this song. I’m not a rap fan by any means, but somehow it works. This is good make-out music.
“Tell me what you really want from me / point blank no discussion.”
- “Partition” Beyoncé
A playlist of sex songs wouldn’t be complete without a Beyoncé song. This song has a strong bass and the necessary sexy lyrics. This song is the opposite of coy – you know exactly what’s happening, and you know it’s hot. Almost any slower Beyoncé song would fit on this playlist, but “Partition” is the best example.
“Took 45 minutes to get all dressed up / we ain’t gonna make it to this club.”
- “No Diggity – Thrift Shop” Ed Sheeran ft. Passenger
Maybe it’s just Michael Rosenberg (better known as Passenger) and his oh-so-smooth English voice, but this song hits the spot—figuratively, I mean. I’m pretty sure this duo could sing the phone book and it would have the same effect, but this mash-up is so sexy. Plus, recorded live it has the audience cheering at the end, in case you need the encouragement.
“Baby you’re a perfect ten, I wanna get in / Let me come in so I can win.”
- “Every Other Freckle” alt-j
While the videos (there are two) for this song are possibly the least sexy things I have ever seen, the lyrics more than make up for it. Listen and you’ll be treated to a blow by blow of all the sexy things hopefully about to happen. Its slow and slinky beat guarantees you’ll be in the mood.
“I wanna be every lever you pull / and all the showers that shower you.”
- “Talk is Cheap” Chet Faker
When I told a friend I was writing this blog post, the first thing she said was the name of this song. Having never heard it before, I was a little skeptical. Good news is, I can now say I’m practically an expert in this song, and I can see why she likes it. It’s sexy and strong. It will make even the shyest of lovers feel a little bolder.
“I wanna make you move with confidence / I wanna be with you alone.”
- “Take Me to Church” Hozier
This is one of those sex-by-candlelight songs. You can practically see the tasteful rom-com sex scene as you listen to smooth melody and strong beat. The song is an ode to a lover, and that never hurts either. Why not let yourself be worshiped?
“She tells me, ‘Worship in the bedroom.’ / The only heaven I’ll be sent to / is when I’m alone with you.”
- “I Feel Like I’m A Million Years Old” Pomegranates
This one is for the lovers. This song says, “I have feelings about you.” This song says commitment. A beautiful track, it has no distracting lyrics and instead just has waves of sound. Take it easy and cuddle. You have love, so everything else can wait.
- “Stolen Dance” Milky Chance
I’m not sure I can really explain the exact appeal of this song. Writing this blog, I listened to it seven times, four of those consecutively. I don’t know what’s so sexy about it . . . the voice? The suggestion of forbidden pleasure in the lyrics? Whatever it is, it’s a good closer as it’s neither overtly sexual nor specifically romantic.
“I want you / we can bring it on the floor / Never danced like this before / we don’t talk about it.”
Bonus Track: “Mt Eden Dubstep” – Sarah McLachlan, Silence
Talking to my friends about this blog, I naturally asked for their best sex song suggestions. She immediately suggested this. Cut to me, incredulously asking, “So . . . you had sex to a Sarah McLachlan remix?” Sounds crazy, but if you like dubstep, this one is perfect.
