Safety improvements will be made to the site of the bus-train collision near Fallowfield Station that took the lives of two Carleton students Sept. 18.
At the City of Ottawa’s transit commission meeting Oct. 16, city manager Kent Kirkpatrick said they will clear vegetation at the site in order to enhance overall visibility and sight lines at the crossing.
Another advanced warning light will be installed, co-ordinated with the crossing signal, “to provide advance notice to northbound traffic,” he said.
The speed limit along the Transitway approaching the crossing will be lowered to 50 kilometres per hour from 60 km/h in both directions, he said.
Kirkpatrick said additional non-regulatory signage to enhance safety will be installed following the transit commission meeting.
The cause of the crash has not been determined.
The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) is an independent agency investigating the crash. It has not released a report on the investigation.
It will take months to complete, transit commission chair Diane Deans said at the meeting.
She said the safety improvements made are a response by the City of Ottawa.
Kirkpatrick said the improvements are not orders, directions, or recommendations of the TSB.
The TSB will give notice to the city of any serious safety issues, he said.
