Ryerson-based community radio station CKLN will remain on air pending further judicial decisions, after the CRTC revoked the station’s license in late January.

CKLN was scheduled to go off the air as of Feb. 12 until Justice Carolyn Layden-Stevenson granted the station a stay.

The next step involves a decision on whether CKLN has the right to appeal the CRTC ruling. A ruling is not expected until at least April, as the deadline to submit documents is not until March 31, programmer and chair of CKLN’s hiring committee Lauren Speers said.

If their leave for appeal is granted – the decision is made after a judge reviews the submitted documents – then CKLN will appeal the CRTC decision in a Federal Court of Appeal hearing.

CKLN, which is independently run and not directly affiliated with Ryerson, lost its license after failing to meet responsibilities and regulatory obligations, CRTC chair Konrad von Finckenstein said in a press release.

Speers said the station is now going ahead with its plans to hire a station manager. Speers said they expect to hire someone by the end of February.

If their right to appeal is not granted, Speers said CKLN does have other legal options available, though she would not disclose any possible legal tactics.

A petition supporting CKLN was at 6,050 signatures as of Feb. 20.
