Hi, my name is Ryan Hussey. I’m a third-year architectural conservation and sustainability engineering student and I’m running for vice-president (student services) with the Real Leadership team.
I’ve been working for Carleton University as a teaching assistant for the past 2 years, and last year I was even nominated for “Best TA” as I consistently went above and beyond to help students. I want to apply my passion for helping students to our service centers.
I feel as though the service centres are being underutilized due to a lack of resources being provided to the centres and a lack of awareness of them amongst students. This year CUSA executives voted to give themselves raises while they budgeted to cut clubs and societies’ funding by thousands of dollars. This is ridiculous, considering they are already one of the highest paid student executive councils in the country, while many regular students go into debt and have to work several jobs just to scrape by.
My team and I plan to decrease executive salaries and benefits to increase funding to clubs and societies. Not only that, but I also want to make sure we have fair hiring practices that give every student a fair shot at CUSA jobs. More specifically, we would create an unbiased hiring committee with representatives of the service centers present and involved, in order to give students a fair chance during the hiring process.
One of my priorities is to have regular consultations with service centres to ascertain what resources they need to easily help students. Also, I’d like to setup a yearly meet and greet between service centres and campus stakeholders so that they can begin to form a basis for communication and begin to work together to provide more assistance to students. I plan to work with Fall Orientation to advertise the service centres during frosh and bring awareness to the resources they provide.
This year it’s time to decide if you want real change within CUSA. Real Leadership is the team that has a real plan, real solutions, and will bring real results you can be proud of.
