A water main burst on campus Feb. 5, leaving Renfrew and Prescott House residents without water for several hours.

The rupture was identified and isolated early in the morning, but the pipes were not shut off until around 2 p.m. Jan. 5, according to housing director David Sterritt.

“The water had to be shut off in order for the maintenance staff to be able to uncover the break and repair it,” Sterritt said.

Kayla Edwards, a first-year criminology student said she received an email informing her of the burst pipe around 2:30 p.m. after returning from lunch.

“We were given free water bottles in Rez Commons from around 4:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. that night, and had to go to the washroom in Minto and Rez Commons,” Edwards said. “We also had to shower in the athletics building.”

According to Edwards, the email did not specify why the pipe burst, only that the crew was seeking to resolve the situation as quickly as possible. She said the water was turned back on around 9:30 a.m. on Feb. 6.
