The Carleton Ravens women’s hockey team rebounded from a 4-3 shootout loss against the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees Oct. 22, defeating the Concordia Stingers the following afternoon.
The Ravens pulled off a 4-2 win against the Stingers, thanks in part to a two-goal performance from Claudia Bergeron. She scored on the Ravens first shot on goal and added another tally shortly after.
“You can see just by the energy that Bergeron brings every single shift and every battle she engages in that she’s a real leader on this team,” said Ravens head coach Shelley Coolidge. “[She’s] somebody that makes a significant impact in terms of where we want to go this season.”
Alexandra Yallouz scored the eventual game-winner midway through the second period, but it wasn’t an easy sailing to the final buzzer. The Ravens lost some momentum after Yallouz’s marker, resulting in two Stingers goals in the second period. But exceptional goaltending from Victoria Powers, who stopped 31 of 33 shots, kept the Ravens ahead.
Coolidge had high praise for Powers, who had her first start against Concordia.
“[Powers] was really calm in the net and got across the net to make some huge saves and gave us a chance to continue and compete because it could have easily been 4-3 for Concordia,” Coolidge said.
The game marked Powers’ first start of the season.
“Sitting out the first games gave me the motivation to work harder and I knew it would pay off in the end,” Powers said.
Coolidge said it’s going to become a difficult decision on who gets the nod between the pipes in upcoming games. Fellow second-year goaltender Tamber Tisdale started in the last three games, while Eri Kiribushi has yet to see the ice this season.
“Any one of the three goalies we have in the program could start,” Coolidge said. “We’ll have to make some tough decisions this week and it’ll depend on how they compete.”
