The 2013 Ottawa Sports Awards was prosperous for Ravens athletes.

From running to boxing, Carleton was represented in many categories.

Athletes from a variety of sports in the Ottawa area were being honoured for their achievements in 2013 at Algonquin College Jan. 29.

The men’s basketball team won Male Team of the Year for the third time in a row, and fourth-year guard Philip Scrubb won Male Athlete of the Year.

Scrubb also won for basketball in the individual sports category and thanked his team first and foremost in his speech.

He said they pushed him “on and off the court making me a better person on the team.”

The past year has been a good one for Scrubb. He led his team in points per game average and was named the Canadian Interuniversity Sport men’s basketball outstanding player for the 2012-2013 regular season.

“My individual success is due to the team success,” Scrubb said.

He said while individual awards are an honour, he is more proud of the team award. Scrubb cited his coach Dave Smart, his teammates, and the Carleton fans as motivators.

“You don’t want to disappoint them so you’ve got to work hard off the court,” Scrubb said.

Scrubb, fifth-year forward Tyson Hinz, and third-year guard Guillaume Payen Boucard were in attendance for the men’s basketball team. The rest of the team was not able to attend due to practice being held right before the awards.

The men’s water polo team and women’s fencing team were also recognized for their Ontario University Athletics gold medals.

Carleton had six athletes win individual sport awards including Leah Larocque who won for road running.

Larocque was the first female finisher in the five-kilometre Canada Army Run and was the top Canadian woman in the 20-24 age class for the 10-kilometre race in the Ottawa Race Weekend.

Other individual sport winners include Kaitlyn Clark for boxing, Ben Wilkinson-Zan for cross-country skiing, Cameron Smedley for whitewater canoe/kayak, and Samuel Zakutney for artistic gymnastics.
