A redeeming night at the Ice House left the Carleton Ravens men’s hockey team with a win to close out their weekend homestand. After a 5-1 loss to the UQTR Patriotes on Saturday, the Ravens bounced back the next day with a 2-1 overtime victory over the Nipissing Lakers.

Following a tight, physical matchup — featuring plenty of rough stuff — the action-packed evening had the crowd on their feet for the final goal of the night.

With just 30 seconds left in overtime, a wraparound by defenceman Majid Kaddoura found the back of the net for his first marker of the season, giving Carleton their sixth win of the year.

“I thought [Dyland Meilun] made some big saves,” Kaddoura said after the game, crediting the Ravens’ starter, who made 24 stops in the victory.

The shots remained close between the two hard-fighting teams for most of the evening. Possession was relatively even throughout, though the Ravens began to take firmer control as the game progressed.

The first period set the tone for the game, showcasing both teams’ ambitious energy. The even play kept the crowd buzzing with excitement.

There were no goals scored, but the intensity carried straight into the second period.

With five minutes remaining, rising aggression on the ice boiled over. A scrap sent Ravens players Blake Allan and Alexandre Hogue to the box, while Reese Belton was handed a ten-minute misconduct.

Less than a minute into the Lakers’ power play, Ken Belanger opened the scoring, putting Nipissing up 1–0. The teams entered the final frame with the shots dead even at 17–17.

With eight minutes left, leading Ravens goalscorer Nick McCarry tied things up with his eighth goal of the year.

“We never gave up on ourselves,” McCarry said after the game.

“I thought our confidence got a bit better as the game went on and our transitions got better as well,” Ravens head coach Mark Cavallin said.

As the Ravens head into the rest of the season, they’ll look to ride this momentum to “get as many wins as [they] can before the break,” McCarry said.

The Ravens take the ice again on Friday, facing the Queen’s Gaels on the road in Kingston. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
