The Carleton Ravens men’s hockey team saw their six game winning streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss to the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees on Nov. 10. It was the first matchup between the crosstown rivals this season.
The Ravens, who are ranked third in U Sports rankings, had beaten McGill University 6-4 on the road two days earlier.
Five different players scored against McGill—including Carleton men’s athlete of the week, Jared Steege with two goals and goalie Justin Nichols picked up the victory.
The team jumped out to an early 3-0 lead before trading goals with the home side. However, their offence dried up against the Gee-Gees.
“I’m disappointed we lost,” Ravens head coach Shaun Van Allen said afterwards.
The Ravens and Gee-Gees both took a lot of penalties throughout the game, but were unable to capitalize.
Carleton went one-for-seven on the power play while the Gee-Gees were zero-for-four.
Rookie goalies Domenic Graham (Gee-Gees) and Mark Grametbauer (Ravens) both made numerous saves to keep the game scoreless in the first period.
Carleton struck first during a power play in the second as forward Brogan O’Brien tipped home a shot by Cole Carter for his second goal of the weekend.
Both sides traded chances and Carleton almost came away from the second period with the upper hand until Andrew Jarvis turned the puck over to Gee-Gees Mathieu Newcomb. Newcomb then streaked into open ice and scored to tie the game with 17 seconds left in the period.
In the third, both Carleton and Ottawa had opportunities to win the game but it was the Gee-Gees who took advantage.
First-year defenceman Nicholas Mattinen scored from in close on Grametbauer with just under seven minutes remaining.
The Ravens were unable to capitalize on a late power play as the Gee-Gees preserved the victory.
“No thoughts on [how to improve] right now. We’ll just go look at the film and try and come up with something different for Friday,” Van Allen said.
“Actually, I don’t think either team played outstanding but full credit for their win.”
The Ravens remain atop the Ontario University Athletics Eastern Conference with 20 points while the Gee-Gees are third with 12 points.
The two teams will face off again on Nov. 15 at the annual Colonel By Classic at TD Place Arena.
