The Ravens football team defeated the Waterloo Warriors 21-18 for their second straight win on the road on Sep. 8 in Waterloo.
“I think it was a big win for us,” Ravens head coach Steve Sumarah said about the game. “We had a tough travel week, with coming off a short week against Windsor and then to play Waterloo, our guys really stepped up and played pretty well in that situation. Waterloo’s a good football team and we were glad that we were able to come away with a win on the road.”
Immediately into the opening quarter, the Ravens picked up a singlet to take a 1-0 lead.
Shortly afterward, Ravens wide receiver Dominic Walker caught an 11-yard pass from quarterback Michael Arruda and safely made it into the end zone to grab the first touchdown of the game. This was followed up by a successful kick from Ravens kicker Michael Domagala.
Two minutes into the second quarter, Waterloo got on the board when they picked up a single of their own.
The Warriors would get two more singles to end the first half with an 8-3 lead for the Ravens.
Five minutes into the third quarter, the Ravens got their second touchdown of the game when Walker ran a 95-yard pass into the end zone from Arruda.
Domagala then sent the ball sailing through the uprights to grab the extra point. He would later convert on a 21-yard field goal two minutes later to bring the score to 18-3.
Waterloo would then get their first touchdown of the game two minutes into the final quarter, when running back Brandon Metz caught an one-yard pass in the end zone from quarterback Tre Ford.
Seven minutes later, Waterloo got their second touchdown of the game when wide receiver Tyler Ternowski caught a five-yard pass from Ford. Team holder Mitch Kernick then tied the game up when the Warriors opted to take the two-point conversion pass and it was successful.
The Ravens then took the lead once more when Domagala scored a 22-yard field goal with eight seconds left in the game to allow Carleton to walk away with a 21-18 victory.
“Both road wins, we had a lot of traveling to do, and we had to come together as a team, as a collective group and kind of work together especially with all the traveling that we had to do,” linebacker Jack Cassar said. “Going to Windsor and having a shorter week with Waterloo, and I think being able to have those two wins is going to bring a lot of momentum for our game coming up against Queen’s, and we’re going to try to build off those wins to keep on rolling.”
The Ravens face off the Queen’s University Gaels in a homecoming game on Sept. 15.
