It could be an all-Ottawa final a week from today at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) men’s basketball championship.
The CIS Final 8 draw was announced earlier today and for the fifth time in six years, the Carleton Ravens will enter the tournament as the top seed.
After losing their season opener at the hands of the University of Windsor Lancers, the defending champion Ravens have won 21 straight games.
Making their first appearance at the event since 2009, the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees slot in as the third seed, meaning the cross-town rivals could meet in the championship final March 10 at Scotiabank Place.
This is the first time the Ravens and the Gee-Gees have been placed on opposite sides of the CIS Final 8 bracket, Gee-Gees head coach James Derouin told Yahoo Sports blog Eh Game.
The Ravens won each of their three meetings against the Gee-Gees this season, including a triple-overtime thriller in the final game of the regular season and a three-point victory in this weekend’s Ontario University Athletics final.
Carleton will open the tournament March 8 against the eighth-seeded University of Victoria Vikes.
Coincidentally, the Ravens and Vikes share the CIS record with eight national titles apiece.
