Students at the University of Windsor were shocked to find racist graffiti next to the bathroom of the school’s new multi-faith prayer space Oct. 28, according to Kaye Johnson, Windsor’s human rights, equity and accessibility director.
The brand new multi-faith centre is a space for students of all faiths to pray in.
The graffiti containing racial slurs against South Asian and Middle Eastern peoples was found in the area surrounding the men’s bathroom.
Johnson said she doesn’t want the incident to overshadow the hard work of the students, who organized and earned the space, Johnson said.
“This incident still proves that there still is ignorance surfacing around,” Johnson said. “There’s still work to be done.”
Johnson said that any kind of action that ensues from this incident needs to empower the people who are doing things “to build up humanity, build up our society, and move things forward.”
“Not things that build up people who want to diminish it and do that kind of action,” she said.
