Mistake or Reality: University of Waterloo gets a D+ on being “Green”
On Oct. 7, the University of Waterloo received a D+ on the College Sustainability Report Card of 2010, a survey sent to the top 332 universities and colleges in North America. This report card rates how eco-friendly and “green” campuses are. The U of W’s D+ is the lowest grade in Ontario – problem is, the university said it never completed the full survey.
Michelle Oliver is a first-year student in the recreation and leisure program at U of W who said one of the reasons she was drawn to the university was how “green” it was.
Give grads the green
Striving to be eco-friendly is not just about attaining a trendy, chic status for aesthetic reasons. Sustainability is a crucial quality that all institutions should seek.
The proposal to create a green roof above the Graduate Students’ Association’s (GSA) lounge is exactly the type of initiative that Carleton should be supporting in order to make progress in this area; green roofs reduce the amount of energy buildings consume.
But the students spearheading this project say administration is holding back support and failing to tell them why.
