A professional soccer franchise is on its way to the nation’s capital.
The North American Soccer League (NASL) announced June 20 that the City of Ottawa would be getting an expansion franchise, owned by the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group (OSEG).
“Ottawa is a natural market with a vibrant business community, large soccer fan base and an exceptional ownership group,” said league commissioner David Downs in a press release.
This franchise will begin operations upon completion of the Lansdowne Park renovations, which will enable the stadium to seat 24,000 fans.
“This will, by far, be the highest caliber soccer we’ll have seen in Ottawa since the 2007 FIFA Men’s U-20 World Cup,” said Ottawa Fury owner John Pugh, who was named president of the new franchise.
The City of Ottawa is a partner on the project, and, as stated by Mayor Jim Watson, “it’s high time Ottawa had a professional soccer team.”
OSEG is offering Ottawa soccer fans the opportunity to purchase season tickets for their NASL team before they become available to the public at large.
