Housing and conference services have confirmed plans for the construction of a new residence, scheduled to open its doors to first and second-year students in September 2011.

The building committee of the Board of Governors approved the proposal to construct the new residence at their last meeting, according to Dave Sterritt, the director of housing and conference services.

Sterritt said an increasing number of second-year students are requesting to live in residence.

“The number of applications that we’ve received from returning students, particularly those who are going into their second year of study, is increasing even more dramatically. At the moment, we can’t accommodate all of the second-year students who would like to return,” Sterritt said.

This is despite the construction of the Frontenac House, the newest residence built in 2008 to accommodate 250 second-year students.

The new residence will be located in the space between Glengarry and Renfrew Houses.

It will be nine storeys and will contain no less than 430 single-occupancy rooms, making it the second-largest residence on campus after Glengarry, which currently houses over 630 students.

Since there will be no kitchenettes, students living in the new residence will require a meal plan from Carleton’s dining services.

Construction is set to begin in May 2010, and is scheduled to be completed by September 2011.
