Mike’s Place has closed down for around three weeks, after the board and executives of the Graduate Student’s Association (GSA) looked to hire a new manager for the pub.

Mike’s will reopen on August 5th, said Ashley Courchene, president of the GSA. Hiring is still ongoing for the position. This leaves Carleton with no open pub on campus, as the renovations to Oliver’s, the Carleton Undergraduate Student’s Association (CUSA) pub are still ongoing.

“What we want to do is cut the losses that Mike’s Place is experiencing, but also generate a stronger community hub for grad students. Part of doing that is closing down for three weeks and make sure we can do that and plan long term.” – Ashley Courchene, GSA president

Changes are being planned for by staff and the executives, such as new drinks, menu options and new events. But these discussions are still ongoing, said Courchene.

The decision was not announced at last month’s council meeting, but the graduate students and the staff of Mike’s Place were notified, and were given paid leave during the three weeks.

“We’re really conscious of the fact it’s the slowest time of the summer, and we’re trying to get the change done before lots of people get back,” said Jesse Whattam vice-president (finance).

“August 5th we’ll be open so please come down and enjoy some food and drinks,” said Courchene.
