The Carleton Ravens men’s soccer team kept up their winning ways with two big games this past week.

The Ravens travelled to Kingston Sept. 4 to play a rare mid-week match against the Queen’s University Gaels. The Ravens were able to take that game against a strong Queen’s side by a score of 2-0.

The Ravens then played to a 4-0 win over the Royal Military College (RMC) Paladins in their home opener at Keith Harris Stadium Sept. 8.

Assistant coach Kwesi Loney credited the wins to great work ethic.

“Well I think our work ethic is probably one of the top in the league and that’s why we have the success that we do. The guys work extremely hard in training and that shows in our season,” he said.

The offensive star of the game against RMC was Ravens captain Joey Kewin, who netted three goals. The first of Kewin’s goals came on an individual effort that blew by the goaltender off the crossbar and into the top corner. The next two goals both came off free kicks from outside the 18-yard box.

Kewin spoke highly of his team’s performance.

“This team has all the parts it needs to win every game and beat any team we play,” he said.

Along with Kewin’s hat trick, Ravens striker Andrew Latty scored in the sixth minute to sway the momentum in Carleton’s favour. First-year goalie Travis Chace got the start in goal for the Ravens and recorded not only his first career Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) win, but also his first CIS clean sheet.

Chace said the game was a perfect start to his CIS career. He also credited the strong back-line of the Ravens who kept his workload relatively low.

Despite the early season success, Loney said the team still has room for improvement.

“It’s still early on in the season for us so were still working out some kinks here and there, for us specifically on the execution side. Today we created a few more opportunities but were unable to finish,” Loney said.

The two wins brought the Ravens to 3-0-1, putting them in first place in the Ontario University Athletics East division.

The CIS second-ranked Ravens are back in action against the winless Trent University Excalibur Sept. 14.
