The Ravens men’s basketball team extended its win streak to six games after they downed the Waterloo Warriors 99-36 on the road Nov. 22.
The game started out heavily in the Ravens favour, with Carleton going on a 13-0 run from the tip-off. The Warriors managed to get a hard-fought layup to break the shut-out later in the quarter but that did not faze the surging Ravens.
The Ravens kept attacking the basket, hitting back-to-back three-pointers and extending the lead 24-2 by the end of the first quarter.
Waterloo finally responded by going on a 10-0 run making the score 36-12 in the second.
“We started the game off strong and then we let up a little bit, but then we got back to our basics on defense and took care of the ball and forced some turnovers,” Ravens forward Jean-Emmanuel Pierre-Charles said.
The Ravens settled things down with 12 unanswered points in the quarter to end the half at 48-12.
The second half continued at the same pace, with the Ravens multiplying the Warriors’ points on offense, giving the younger players more time on the court, such as Mitchell Wood and Cameron Smythe.
The game resulted in a lopsided 99-36 victory for the Ravens.
Pierre-Charles led the team with 16 points, shooting six of nine from the floor. Connor Wood was just behind with 14.
“It feels good. Obviously it’s just so early in the season that you don’t take in that you’re 6-0, but when you look back at the past three weeks, we’ve done some good things,” Pierre-Charles said.
He explained how the Ravens’ continued dominance can be traced to their strong defensive play.
“Holding Waterloo to 33 and trying to hold each team to a low number determines how good we’re going to be,” he said.
The Ravens face the University of Toronto Varsity Blues on Nov. 28, followed by the Ryerson Rams, the third-ranked team in the Canadian Interuniversity Sport rankings.
Pierre-Charles said he believes they need to stick to their basics to defeat the number three seed.
“Same thing we’ve been preaching all year, defending and rebounding but also taking care of the ball,” he said. “They’re a pretty explosive team. They like to run the ball a lot, so try and slow the game down.”
