The Charlatan (TC): Why did you decide to come to Carleton?
Matt Dopud (MD): They approached me a lot and I felt really comfortable with what they were telling me and they seemed like they really wanted me. I like going to places where they want me to play, not just to try out. Also, it’s close to home; it’s only two hours away. I just felt it was a good fit for me.
TC: How much did the past success of the hockey program play in your decision to come here?
MD: I talked to the coaches before the decision and they really want to win. They’re doing everything they can to win. So far it’s been good, it’s been a fun time, the hockey’s been fun. I think even this year we have a good enough team to make it all the way.
TC: What’s the biggest difference between playing university hockey and playing major junior?
MD: I find there’s a lot more hitting, there are bigger hits, people aren’t afraid. The thing I don’t like is that there’s no fighting because people keep running their mouths because they know that there’s no fighting. Other than that, it’s good hockey. It’s different; it’s fun.
TC: Can you talk about your teammates and the dynamic in the dressing room?
MD: It feels like I’m back with my old team. The first week I was here, everyone was asking me to go out with the guys. It just felt like I wasn’t an outcast from day one. That’s one of the things I like about it here, everyone gets along and everyone has a good time.
TC: What’s your favourite personal hockey moment from your career?
MD: When I was 14 and 15, I won back-to-back provincial championships in Quebec. Also, I think my biggest would be playing in the Memorial Cup [in 2009, when Rimouski was the host team]. I also got on “Misplays of the Week” when I fell off the bench, that was pretty funny.
