Marty Johnston has signed a four-year deal to become the new head coach of the Carleton Ravens men’s hockey team, the school announced in a statement June 14th.
Johnston served three years as an assistant under former head coach Fred Parker, whose contract was not renewed at the end of last season.
“I’m really excited, it’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” said Johnston. "I can’t wait to get on the ice with the guys.”
Johnston was the clear choice for the job, said Jennifer Brenning, Carleton’s athletics director.
“When we interviewed him we were very impressed with his approach to the team, his knowledge of the game and his leadership skills,” said Brenning. “We were very impressed with him and what he can bring to the program.”
Johnston had an extensive playing career, including a Memorial Cup with the Hull Olympiques in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and a two-year stint as captain of the Dalhousie University Tigers. He played professionally in the American Hockey League and in Europe.
“Marty was a great assistant coach and he is completely ready to make the step and be a great head coach,” said team captain Brad Good. “Marty’s experience as a university and pro hockey player provides the passion it takes to lead a winning team.”
Johnston’s familiarity with the team will prove to be an asset as they transition to life without coach Parker. Johnston said replacing his former boss isn’t the way he would have liked to land the position, but it’s time for the team to take the next step.
“It’s nothing personal,” said Johnston. “The guys seem to be really excited, so we’re just looking to move forward.”
“Having a familiar face take over as head coach is often the best scenario,” said Good. “All of our current players are familiar with what Marty brings to the table and we know the high expectations that he will have. Nobody was happy to see coach Parker (depart) as head coach of this hockey team.”
“Marty is our new head coach and the players are happy with that decision.”
Johnston said he doesn’t anticipate the coaching change will have a negative influence on any of the players Parker had recruited to join the Ravens for the coming season.
“I’ve been trying to meet with them, tell them more about me,” he said. “I’ve met with a few of them and they seem very positive about coming to Carleton.”
Johnston has already picked out his coaching staff for next season. Joining him behind the bench will be former NHL defenseman Shaun Van Allen, as well as Ravens hockey alumnus Ryan Medel. Tom Dempsey will return as the goaltending coach. q
