After two years of pandemic-related cancellations, the Capital Pride Parade returned to Ottawa Aug. 28, bringing thousands of participants and spectators to the streets of the downtown core.
The parade marked the end of a week full of Capital Pride festivities, including a family picnic, public art project and several drag shows.
More than 185 floats and 7,500 participants paraded north on Kent Street, east on Laurier Street, south on Elgin Street and west on Gladstone Avenue. The route took approximately 90 minutes for all participants to complete.
The parade featured contributions from a diverse range of groups, including corporations, government sectors, first responders, sports teams and student groups.
Among other student groups, the Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) and Carleton University EngiQueers both participated in the parade.
Next year’s festivities will mark the third and final year of the Capital Pride Strategic Plan, which promises expansion of “the number, size, and scope of celebratory activities.”
After a successful return to in-person celebrations, participants will have even more to look forward to in 2023.
