From dealing with everything from the heat to the sudden collapse of a stage in a windstorm, this year’s Bluesfest has called on some serious festival survival skills.

While Bluesfest may be over, the festival season continues. The Charlatan’s Catherine Tunney interviewed some Carleton students who survived Bluesfest and got some tips on how to survive any outdoor festival.

Do:
  • Pack your own sealed water.
  • Wear suncreen and sunglasses.
  • Wear orthopaedic shoes or hiking boots.
  • Bring a tarp ― you’ll make some friends.
  • Bring a poncho.
  • Go a little early.
  • Be shifty when going through crowds (try the convoy method).
  • Bring a “friend.”

Don’t:

  • Accept peanuts from the crazy in the front row.
  • Drink too much too early because it will hit you too quickly especially in the heat.
  • Wear open-toe sandals or any dangly bags or necklaces.
  • Wear jeans, because they don’t dry quickly
  • Wear short skirts because they are prone to wardrobe malfunctions.
  • Be too aggressive in a crowd.
  • Be closed-minded about the bands you are seeing.
  • Get caught smuggling your “friend” in.
