Carleton became the first Canadian university to complete an important construction project with both support from the federal and provincial stimulus funding program with the opening of the new Canal Building, according to a Jan. 18 press release.
Capital investment in both the Canal Building and the River Building, which is slated to open later this year, totaled $52.5 million from federal and provincial governments, according to the same press release.
Construction began in 2009, with the Canal Building slated to open in December 2010 and the River Building scheduled to open in June 2011, according to Carleton’s website.
The Canal Building, which features a green roof, will house biomedical, energy, environmental and aerospace engineering, said the press release.
It added that the River Building, which includes both a bio wall and a green roof, will house the Normal Paterson School of International Affairs, the School of Journalism and Communication and the School of Public Policy.
It will have a 400-seat theatre dedicated to international presentations and Film studies, as well as an atrium with a river-view patio, a conference centre, cafeteria and classroom space.
An opening ceremony for the Canal Building is scheduled for Jan. 20.
