As I was strolling along the canal on my way to campus, admiring the bright reflections on the melting ice, I noticed something new, ducklings. There were ducklings. I know the groundhog has become a symbol for Spring, but to me nothing says the end of Winter like baby birds paddling in water. Spring is here, so lets start walking.

Back in the days of -30 C, it was logical to skip the stroll and run for the warm bus. In Spring, walking can be done anywhere, solo or with companions, and it can be integrated easily into your lifestyle, without equipment (#cheapstudent), and it’s low risk. It’s an awesome way to reduce stress, clear your mind, sleep better, get clearer skin, burn fat, and release some endorphins.

We have many options simply looking around the Carleton area. Walking along the canal will take you to Heron Bridge—and after about fifteen minutes, you’ll get to Mooney’s Bay. This is a great place to relax. Near the bay, you can catch sight of the falls as you loop back towards campus.

Alternatively, turn right instead of left on Colonel By Drive and it’s roughly a 30 minute walk to Dow’s Lake, which in the warmer summer months offers rental kayaks, canoes and paddle boards for outdoor fun. If you take this route, I would definitely recommend crossing the little footbridge along the path and walking on the other side, it is further from the road, allowing you a little escape into the lovely nature.

We’ve been pegged the lazy generation as our technologically-driven lives have given us options which greatly reduce our needs to move. However, our bodies haven’t rewired themselves to the point that we do not need exercise. Walking is a great way to get that in or add to any regular routine that you may already have, and Ottawa is a great place to do it.

Another close, well-known but rarely explored park is the one just across the river, Vincent Massey. This park is vast and provides a great route for biking. Just cross the Rideau River via Heron Bridge (recommended) or Bronson and you’re there. This area has a nice view of campus, regular events throughout the year and it’s a great location for a spring afternoon picnic.

There’s no huge need to remind ourselves of the benefits of exercise. We’ve been taught since a very young age that it’s a vital part of a healthy lifestyle. It’s not the lack of knowledge but the lack of motivation stopping us.

Think about all the benefits and the beauty of this city that you can’t notice behind glass windows. There really is a whole different world out there. A world with happy ducklings, warm spring weather and healthy selves.
