Philip Hamilton, a former Virginia state delegate, has been sentenced to nine-and-a-half years in prison after being convicted of bribery charges, according to the Richmond Times-Dispatch.
Hamilton was found guilty of arranging a $40,000 annual salary for himself from Old Dominion University (ODU) in exchange for his lobbying efforts to secure public funding for a new teacher training centre.
Carleton president Roseann Runte was president of ODU at the time and was previously implicated in the case.
Runte has denied any involvement in the events that led to his conviction.
Andrew Sacks, Hamilton’s lawyer, told the Charlatan in May that the witness who made the allegations against Runte has “admitted to lying to various investigators about this case, which renders his credibility highly questionable.”
She was not further implicated after testifying.
“The case never did involve me,“ Runte said. “My deposition and the evidence underscored that. I have nothing further to add now that the case is closed.”
Hamilton is expected to appeal. He served at ODU for two years, stepping down in 2009 when the bribery charges were made public.
