A bottle drive with proceeds dedicated to Arif Merani was held during the Greek Olympics Oct. 18 to 21.
Merani was a Carleton student and member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity who died after being hit by a vehicle Oct. 14.
The Greek Olympics is an annual competition between Carleton’s fraternities and sororities. They compete to raise money for a charity the Greek community selects each year, Greek social council president Alex Sirois said.
“Each organization has banded together through these hard times to give support to one another as well as raise money for the Merani family,” Sirois said. “With the sad news of Arif’s passing, the Greek community came together and decided to donate the bottle drive money to his family or a charity of their choice.”
Sirois said the Greek community raised more than $4,000 through the bottle drive.
Kappa Sigma president Alex Anderson said the members of fraternities and sororities were supportive of coming together as a community and playing the games in Merani’s name.
He said Merani’s family was grateful and found it comforting to know people were so supportive.
“When they found out they were shocked in a sense . . . and [it’s] good to know that so many people love their son,” Anderson said.
He said the family hasn’t decided on whether they are going to start a fund in Merani’s name or give the proceeds to a charitable organization.
The Greek community held a moment of silence to honour the memory of Merani on the evening of Oct. 18, Sirois said.
There was a vigil to commemorate Merani in Fenn Lounge on Oct. 23.
