Carleton’s newest chancellor, the Right Honourable Herb Gray, joined the ranks of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity on March 24.
The initiation ceremony was held in Robertson Hall and the Carleton and Ottawa community was invited to commemorate the occasion.
The fraternity said they asked Carleton’s chancellor to join as they believed it would be an incredible opportunity for them.
Gray did not hesitate to accept the invite.
“We asked Herb Gray because he served the Canadian community for many years and is still doing so,” said Jon Telch, president of Alpha Epsilon Pi’s Ottawa chapter. “To have the opportunity to have someone as prestigious as him become a member of our fraternity was one we couldn’t pass up.”
Gray’s role in the fraternity is mostly symbolic, but he will occasionally participate as an active role model to the group.
“He holds an honorary title, but also, he can come in and speak to the guys on occasion about important issues and his experiences from being deputy prime minister to being the longest-serving member of parliament, to his current role as Canadian Chair of the International Joint Commission of Canada,” Telch said. “Just to share his knowledge is an incredible opportunity for us.”
