Clinton Springer-Williams, a former Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) rookie of the year and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) athlete, has committed to joining the Carleton Ravens men’s basketball team in 2012.

Springer-Williams’ journey to the Ravens took more than a step.

After being named rookie of the year at Brock University during his freshman year, he transferred to Gannon University in Erie, Pa. in 2010 after he was offered a full scholarship.

Springer-Williams averaged 1.9 points and 5.9 minutes a game with the Gannon University Golden Knights, according to Basketball Buzz.

In his freshman year at Brock, he averaged 21 points-per-game.

“I think it is wonderful that he is returning to the CIS,” said Ken Murray, Springer-Williams’ former coach at Brock.

“I know [Ravens head coach] Dave Smart will get the most out of [Springer-Williams] as a player and provide him with the guidance he needs to become one of the top players in the country.”

Clinton is not only a great player but a great person,” Murray continued.

“He will be one of the keys that Carleton needs to continue their winning ways.”

During his time with Brock, Springer-Williams was ranked in the top 10 in Ontario University Athletics for field goals made, free throws made and free throw percentage.

Springer-Williams will be ineligible to join the team immediately as a result of CIS regulations, but he will play in 2012-13, bringing his strengths to the Ravens court.

“He is, first of all, a great athlete with a tremendous work ethic,” Murray said. “He has above average jumping ability and is excellent at breaking down his defensive man.”

“Although he likes driving to the basket, he can also keep his defensive man on his toes by shooting the three point shot. He is also an excellent rebounder with great hands.

“My biggest disappointment is that I no longer coach Clinton but I firmly believe that Dave Smart and the Carleton following will enjoy watching this young man on the court,” Murray finished.

Springer-Williams’ commitment for the 2012-13 season is timely for the Ravens basketball program.

While the team only lost Mike Kenny after the 2010-11 season, veteran players Cole Hobin, Elliot Thompson and Willy Manigat will all be leaving the squad after the upcoming year.

Other Ravens recruits this year include Justin Shaver, Ryan Augustine, Ben Felix and Guillaume Payen-Boucard.
