During the homecoming football game there were several instances of Ravens fans acting inappropriately and causing disturbances.
To prevent this embarrassment to the Carleton community from happening again, better security measures are needed at football games.
This game was played in front of not only current Carleton students but also alumni, some who travelled to Ottawa for homecoming. Many alumni provide funding to the school, and the students’ behaviour during the game was not representative of a school deserving of donations from their past students.
Announcements were made multiple times asking fans to stop throwing items at the opposing team, but they didn’t improve the situation.
A team should not have to stop the game in order to move their bench and equipment to the other side of the field because of the way they are being treated by the fans.
The situation should have been dealt with quickly by the security standing at the bottom of the bleachers and did not need to escalate to that point.
The actions of the fans at the game reflect the university as a whole, not just the football team. They can have severe negative effects on the school if these actions continue. Fans should be unified in supporting the Ravens, not in tearing down and disrespecting the teams they face.
