Glengarry House, or as it is colloquially known among some Carleton students, “Glen-Ghetto,” has a long history of busted pipes, broken elevators, and bug infestations.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise this year’s crop of students are angry about the residence’s state of disrepair.
What is surprising though, is that a student has created a petition to get the university administration to fix some of Glengarry’s problems.
The petition alleges the building’s biggest problem now is that it “has a number of pests that have been brought to the attention of the university.” It goes into more detail by specifying that the eleventh floor is “infested with flies and ladybugs,” and cockroaches “run rampant in the building.”
The university responded to the petition saying any pipe problems were fixed as soon as possible and that it had not seen any signs of cockroaches.
But students say the residence is still not up to par.
Perhaps the petition’s claims are unfounded, perhaps they aren’t. What is clear is that a petition was necessary to get the university to pay attention and that is shameful.
Students who live in Glengarry pay the same housing costs as other first-year students who live in the same type of room in a different residence.
There needs to be a concrete plan to fix Glengarry’s problems—all of them.
