The Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) held one in September, the Rideau River Residence Association (RRRA) held its in November, and Carleton Equity Services is holding its in the final week of February.
Sexual assault awareness is an important issue and one students should be heavily invested in, but if there are going to be three separate weeks for it, there should be some collaboration.
It’s ineffective to have three different weeks by three different groups. Information from the workshops and presentations could become redundant, and students are more likely to tune out.
Having some co-ordination between these groups would be not only more economically feasible for all of them, but it would encourage student engagement.
If RRRA holds a sexual assault awareness week targeted towards students living in residence and CUSA holds one targeted towards all undergraduates, the audiences overlap anyway.
Would it not be more economical to combine their efforts?
None of the efforts of any of these groups should be diminished—simply combined to get more student participation.
It’s good the issue is being addressed, but the current system could be improved with a team effort.
