It is not only students who will be saying farewell to the Carleton campus this summer with fond memories, but also Dr. George Iwama, the dean of science, who will be leaving the university to become the new president of the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC) July 1.
Iwama brings plenty of experience to the post having been Dean of Science twice, once at Acadia University and then again at his current position at Carleton, which he has held for the past two years. British Columbia will not be foreign territory for Iwama as he has studied and taught at the University of British Columbia.
While at Carleton, Iwama has been the driving force behind many big projects that have brought science to the community of Ottawa, including science cafes. These cafes provide an opportunity for researchers to discuss relevant issues facing today’s society with the general public in relaxed environments.
Myron Smith, an associate professor in the department of biology at Carleton, said Iwama was very committed to bringing science to the people in Ottawa and making better connections with the public.
Colleagues and faculty alike will miss Iwama around campus as he sets off on his new adventure.
“He is very personal, well spoken and very organized. He was a very good dean,” said Smith.
