With less than two months remaining until Carleton’s annual orientation week, the Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) has confirmed a headline act for this year’s frosh concert.
Juno-nominated, Toronto-based band Down With Webster will perform in front of incoming students Sept. 6 at Carleton, following annual beach day activities, CUSA vice-president (student life) David Tapiero confirmed July 21.
Tapiero said the official announcement would be made at the July 21 Shinerama Social at Oliver’s Pub.
“We are quite happy to have Down With Webster as our headliner this year,” Tapiero said. “They were everybody’s number one pick, and we feel everyone will enjoy the show no matter their taste in music. Down With Webster’s songs are all over the radio, and they have great mass appeal."
Joining the likes of past Carleton frosh concert headliners Tokyo Police Club, K-OS, The Trews, and Bedouin Soundclash, Tapiero said Down With Webster is very excited to play at Carleton. The band even rescheduled their show at Algonquin College that same week to accommodate Carleton’s proposed date, Tapiero said.
Down With Webster first gained notoriety in 2008 when they won the Rogers Mobile/Universal Music best unsigned artist in Canada contest. Soon after, industry heavyweights Timbaland and Gene Simmons were eager to sign the band to their respective record labels, according to an October 2009 press release from their current label, Universal Motown.
Down With Webster released their debut EP, Time to Win, Vol. 1 in 2009, with all three singles from the album, “Your Man,” “Rich Girl$,” and “Who is Me” becoming platinum certified in Canada. The album sold over 40,000 copies in Canada and was certified gold, according to the Canadian Recording Industry Association. “Whoa is Me” also won the pop video of the year award at the 2011 Much Music Video Awards in June. Their next album, titled Time to Win, Vol. 2, is set to be released this fall.
Throughout their young career, the band has shared the stage with artists Forever the Sickest Kids, Timbaland, The Black Eyed Peas, Hellogoodbye, and 3OH!3. Tapiero couldn’t confirm who would open for Down With Webster at this year’s frosh concert.
