Here’s a little something to revamp that tired old dorm room you’ll be spending the next eight months in.  Give the room a pop of colour and light with these simple, do-it-yourself lights!

Materials:

Christmas/fairy lights

Coloured paper

Cupcake liners

Food colouring

Scissors

Exacto knife

Container for dyeing

Clear tape (optional)

Directions

Alternatively, use a bowl.  Add food colouring to the water.  The more you add, the more intense the colour will be.  Dip the liners into the dye and allow to dry completely. Set aside some non-dyed liners for step two.

2) While the liners are drying, make the petals for the flowers.  Take a leftover liner and fold it in half three times. Cut a round shape around the top, away from the pointed end.  When you unfold the cut, you should have an eight-petaled flower.

3) Next comes the leaves.  Take your coloured paper and trace medium sized circles onto it. The size really depends on how big you want your leaves to be.  Cut the circles out and proceed to fold them in half twice.  From here, cut a leaf-like shape into the paper.  When unfolded, it should have four leaves.

5) The final step is assembly.  Slide a leaf onto a single light in your string. Follow it up with a dyed liner and then a petal one.  If your cuts are too big, or if you just want to be safe, add a small piece of clear tape over top of the cut on the petal liner.  That should secure it well.

Now you’re ready to use your newly decorated lights any way you choose to brighten up your dorm room!
