A Dalhousie University student received multiple criminal charges after allegedly admitting to plan to shoot and kill 20 people and himself, court documents allege.
Medical student Stephen Tynes, 30, has been charged with two counts of uttering threats, one count of engaging in threatening conduct directed at a person or any member of their family, and a possession of a modified weapon.
According to the documents, Tynes told a psychiatrist on Aug. 20 he would obtain a gun and kill several people. He was arrested the same day.
Tynes was released on bail, but cannot contact any of the people he allegedly threatened and must remain 25 km away from Dalhousie campus.
Police found two rifles and nearly 2,000 rounds of ammunition when they searched Tynes’ apartment Aug. 21, according to court documents.
Dalhousie said it suspended Tynes from the university. The school increased security on campus following the incident and was in close contact with Halifax Regional Police.
Dalhousie engineering student Kenny Dolson said he stills feels Dalhousie is a safe place.
“I would say it’s a fairly safe school. I don’t feel threatened at all,” he said.
