The Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) and the Rideau River Residence Association (RRRA) partnered with a local start-up during frosh week.

Bumpn is a social media app that allows users to upload and tag photos with a location to find out “what’s happening around them,” according to the app’s website.

CUSA and RRRA both ran contests centred on the app during frosh week. Students could win $100 a day for eight days by taking a picture with a CUSA executive and tagging it on the app, according to CUSA president Fahd Alhattab. RRRA president Graham Pedregosa said RRRA was giving away selfie sticks to students who took selfies with the app.

Alhattab said that while he does not use the app, it’s cool for students and the contest was a great way to get students involved with CUSA.

“I think it’s another social media app,” he said. “The value is the contest. A first-year student saying ‘oh I could win $100 if I enter a contest? Sweet!’ That’s the value of the app for us,” Alhattab said.

Creator and founder Monty Elsabbagh said the app was the brainchild of random meetings on campus.

“People who have Bumpn can post and—because it’s location-based—to share and discover what’s happening on campus,” he said. “It will go to the community and that’s their involvement.”
