Clubs and societies at Carleton can now receive an additional $100 in grants from the Carleton University Students' Association (CUSA).
The motion was passed at a constitution and policy council meeting on July 26, with members unanimously voting to increase the maximum amount any club or society can receive per term from $1000 to $1100.
The increase was partly because of the rising costs that clubs and societies are facing, according to discussion at the meeting.
“We have a number of large clubs that annually require the maximum amount, and are restricted by the limit,” said Khaldoon Bushnaq, CUSA vice-president (internal affairs). “This increase allows them to have the money they need for their budget.”
While every club and society will have access to the money, they will still have to prove it is being used for the right purpose. Things like events and renting out halls is supported, while buying sweaters or T-shirts is not. As before, funding can be obtained by applying for a grant from CUSA.
"The process will be just as before," Khaldoon said. "Only now when clubs write-up their budget, the additional 10 per cent will be available.”
