In a virtual meeting on Dec. 6, the Carleton University Students’ Association (CUSA) council voted unanimously to implement new bylaws.

The first draft of the bylaws was presented at a meeting on Nov. 29, but the councillors had little time to review the updated version of the bylaws. According to public affairs councillor Gray Simms, the updated bylaws were only distributed the morning of the meeting.

No motion to delay the vote was proposed and the vote of approval was unanimous.

The structural changes in the new bylaws include the merging of CUSA’s association and corporation, a new Board of Directors who will hold council accountable, the reduction of vice-presidents’ power and vice-presidents no longer being elected by students.

With the new bylaws now officially approved, they will come into effect on May 1. In the meantime, CUSA is preparing to transition to the new structural changes.

“I believe that bright days are ahead of us,” said Ahmad Hashimi, vice-president (internal) and acting president, as the meeting drew to a close. “And this is the step that will bring those bright days.”

The council’s next meeting is scheduled for Jan. 17.
